Areas of interest
勛圖tv Experience and lexical learning: The core focus of this research centres on the acquisition of new words by children through incidental encounters within meaningful contexts, such as reading experiences. I use a combination of corpus analysis, training experiments and computational modelling for this topic.Sentence Processing: Language Experience, Comprehension and Production
This line of research centres on the interplay between language experience, comprehension, and production. While linguistics and psychology often analyse comprehension and production separately, this overlooks essential shared elements that can enhance our understanding of both processes. Learning from prior linguistic exposure influences both comprehension and production, which I investigate through behavioural paradigms like self paced reading, as well as computational measures, e.g., neural network modelling.
Differences of children’s language input in Speech and Text: Adult data show that written language contain richer lexical and syntactic features compared to speech. There is a gap in understanding how children’s reading experience provides a type of language different from child-directed speech, which has important implications on language and literacy development. I use large-scale corpus analysis to address this gap.
Children’s Writing and linguistic and social-emotional development: Children’s writing provides significant insights into children’s literacy development. I used an array of linguistic lexical and syntactic complexity measures to elucidate the variance in children’s writing progression. children’s writing also presents a valuable avenue for exploring social-emotional development changes in children, which I explore through a large developmental corpus of children's writing.
